I am studying towards a Bachelor of Technology, majoring in Medical Physics and Imaging Technology at the University of Auckland.
I worked on a research project in laser ultrasonics with Dr Ludmila (Mila) Adam and Dr Kasper van Wijk.
We investigated the measurement of seismic wave velocities by using a novel non-contacting laser-based system. This system has previously been used to measure wave velocities of dry rock samples on the benchtop. In this project, we have worked towards using the same system to measure wave velocities in rock samples at pressure conditions as those present inside the earth (up to a depth of 2km). Knowledge of seismic wave velocities can be used to estimate the stiffness tensor of anisotropic rock samples and provide valuable information for seismic data analysis with important implications in sectors ranging from seismology to petrology.
